A on M School

Weekly Letter

12th July 2010

Dear Parents,

Proposed Y10-13 Social Sciences visit to Krakow, Poland, 25th - 28th February 2011. Ashton on Mersey School is once again proud to provide an opportunity for pupils to experience a trip of a lifetime. Poland was the catalyst for the start of WWII and was at the frontline of Nazi oppression against Jewish and other groups. Later it came under the control of the mighty USSR and lived under Communist rule until the end of the Cold War.  With such a rich political and cultural history this trip promises to provide pupils with an educational experience they will never forget and forever appreciate. The trip includes visits to the Jewish Ghettos, Oscar Schindler's factory, Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps, the Wieliczka Salt mines and Jewish & Polish cultural meals. The cost is £410 and full details are available from Mr Allen in Room 57 or by email on pallen@aom.trafford.sch.uk

Spanish Speaking Countries in the Developing World. On the morning of  July 6th M band students took part in a Deep learning event. The focus of this event was Latin America. The students took part in a variety of activities including geographical facts - what countries make up Latin America? What is the difference between Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish?  We were able to do this task thanks to Miss Barlow who has lived in Ecuador and Cuba plus Manuel Carvajal from 9PA who is Columbian. One session focussed on poverty in Guatemala and provided evidence towards the International School Award. For the third session the school were lucky to have Mrs Sol Goodwin on the staff who is from Argentina. She delivered a Salsa dance session which was enjoyed by all and impressed every one with her dance skills!

Stars of the week: Congratulations and well done to our Stars of the Week, 5th - 9th July 2010

Yours sincerely,
