Main Contact: Mr A Loftus: Head of Year 9
Pupils are assigned to two bands of equal ability for timetabling purposes. In Year 9, they are then grouped in a variety of different ways.
Pupils are assigned a tutor group in Year 7 and remain in the same tutor group throughout their time at Ashton on Mersey School. In Year 9 they are not taught in form groups.
Following Key Stage 3 SATs results from Year 8, pupils are set independently for the core subjects, which include English, Mathematics and Science. Technology and PE also create their own sets depending on the pupils’ choice and ability. All other subjects are dictated by the English SATs results. Pupils may find that throughout the year they are moved groups in the core subjects, depending on their progress. Progress in all three subjects is measured using a variety of assessment methods throughout the year, please see individual subject sheets for more information.
Year 9 is an important foundation year for your child preparing for the GCSEs in Year 10 and 11. Pupils will be starting their GCSE content in Core Subjects and the English Baccalaureate (E-Bacc) subjects this year. In addition, pupils will be completing their GCSE in Statistics this year, which should give them a firm understanding of the GCSE process.
This year your child will choose their options and there will be the opportunity to talk to staff and subject leaders at the Year 9 Progress and Pathways Evening on Thursday 6th February 2020. Please put the date in your diary as this is a key date in the transition to Key Stage 4. Throughout this booklet you will find information about what your child will be studying this year in each subject and an overview of the curriculum. I hope you will find this booklet useful and informative and if you have any questions or concerns then please do not hesitate to contact us. However, if you have a specific query about an individual subject please contact the Head of Department who will be able to assist you, their names are on the subject information sheet.
