Ashton on Mersey U13 girls’ team has been successful in gaining a place in Greater Manchester Schools 11 A-side Cup Final this year. They face St Joseph’s RC Sports College on the 5th May at MANCAT 6pm. They are hoping to be the second girls’ team from Ashton to hold the 11 A-side title.
The U13’s team were also recently invited play in a 6 a-side tournament organised by Manchester United’s Football Foundation. They played Wright Robinson Sports College in the final of the first round with a convincing 3-1 victory for Ashton where they went ahead early in the game and goals from Molly Smith and Mia Walters and an excellent performance in goal from Mia Pemberton secured our invitation to the 2nd round of the Man United tournament the following week. Once again Ashton girls made the final after winning all their group stage games to meet Wright Robinson in the final once again. This time Wright Robinson proved to be a greater challenge for Ashton keeping the score at 0-0 for the first half of the game. A goal form Molly Smith in the second half put Ashton in front and the game finished 1-0 to Ashton. Paige Hughes was awarded player of the tournament for her outstanding performance in defence.
The girls have now been selected as tournament winners to represent Manchester United in a national 6 a-side tournament at the Reebok Stadium on Tuesday 24th May. Captain Mia Walters plays centre mid-field for Man City U13’s. Amy Holt also plays for Man City girls in the U15’s age group on the left of mid-field. Dakota Ditchev plays right back for Altrincham girls along with Paige Hughes in mid-field. Mia Pemberton of Unicorn Athletic plays left mid-field but is also a very good goal keeper. Molly Smith is the team’s top goal scorer and has played for various teams. Olivia Barnes plays in mid-field and Tonika Colquhou play in defence.
