The Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium is funding provided to schools from the Government, in addition to the main funding stream. The Catch-up Premium is allocated to supporting those pupils who did not achieve the expected standard at the end of Key Stage 2 in either Mathematics, English reading, or both. Schools are free to spend the Catch-up Premium as they see fit, within specific parameters, to fund strategies to close the attainment gap between those pupils who did not attain the expected standard and their peers.
Unlike Pupil Premium, the Catch-up Premium is only awarded to pupils in Year 7.
For 2018 to 2019, schools received the same overall amount of Year 7 Catch-up Premium funding they received in the previous academic year (£500 per pupil), adjusted to reflect the percentage change in the size of their Year 7 cohort, based on the October 2018 census.

At Ashton on Mersey School we assess the individual needs of each of the pupils who attract the Year 7 Catch-up Premium to decide the best way to use the funding. We select programmes and approaches that we know are effective at raising the attainment and encouraging progress.
Examples of how Catch-up Premium is used include:
Aimed at increasing confidence in reading by utilising specific strategies for pupils whose reading age is deemed as being low compared to their peers. Pupils are initially helped by accessing the accelerated reading programme that helps to assess and then monitor pupils’ reading ages and the progress they make trough regular reading sessions.
Lexia phonics intervention
All pupils who had a KS2 English reading score below the national standard received a concentrated session of Lexia phonics intervention to help them increase their standards of reading and comprehension in relation to their peers.
Pupils who come with a KS2 standardised score below the expected standard receive intervention from Miss Lace, our Numeracy co-ordinator. Pupils are prioritised on ability and those pupils who need help more urgently. Pupils spend their time either on an individual or small group basis practicing numeracy skills needed to help them close the gap on their peers.
For the Year 2018 – 2019 pupils started KS3 with standardised test scores calculated from their KS2 tests. Pupil raw data is converted into our own pupil tracking system. Pupils can therefore, be measured as either being ‘on’, above’ or ‘below’ their academic targets set for the end of Year 7.
44 % (16) of targeted pupils starting Year 7 in 2018 below the expected standard in Maths made expected progress at the end of Year 7.
22% (8) of pupils made progress above their end of Year 7 target in Maths.
49% (21) pupils who started Year 7 below the expected standard in English made expected progress at the end of Year 7.
19% (8) pupils made progress above their end of Year 7 target in English.
