The Year 7 boys football team have just competed in an 8aside football tournament that has been arranged by the MUFC scholars who attend Ashton-on-Mersey School.
The tournament took place at MUFC’s Carrington Training Ground complex and a number of schools from Trafford took part in this annual event. The boys played league games against St.Antonys, Sale High and Altrincham College of Arts and were unbeaten throughout this preliminary stage scoring thirteen goals and conceding only five. The squad played well but there were some strong performances from Jake Whitham, Reece Rehouma and Davian Grant.
The fast surface suited the type of football that the team liked to play and at times played some excellent football, looking to build up attacks from their own half and control possession wherever possible. Centre midfielder Ty Mckie was instrumental in the formation that Mr Canny adopted and it was his quick thinking and all round vision that dictated the football that Ashton played.
The structure of the tournament meant that Ashton now played Altrincham College of Arts in the final, as these two teams had the best records and the game started well for Ashton with man of the moment Davian Grant blasting two goals in quick succession. The Year 7 team then took their foot off the pedal and allowed ACA opportunity to get back into the game. At half time the score was 2-1. With a motivating team talk from Mr Canny still ringing in their ears Davian Grant created a third goal for George Banner, restoring their two goal cushion, however ACA scored a second with four minutes to go and with the defence standing solid under the exceptional guidance of captain Alex May Ashton were crowned winners. Man of the match for the final was Davian Grant.
